Collier County Public Library has been awarded $27,000 in grant money to teach computer skills to job-seeking individuals who have little or no experience with electronic resources. This project is funded under the provisions of the Library Services and Technology Act of the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, and is administered by the Florida Department of State’s Division of Library and Information Services.
Collier County Library is using the grant to fund Collier Connects, a series of 49 hands-on computer skills training classes, at the East Naples, Estates, and Immokalee branch libraries. The classes include PC Basics, Internet Basics, Email Basics, Word Basics and Excel Basics. The classes are geared towards beginner-level computer users.
This grant will also fund workshops on career assessment, resume writing, and interview skills. Workshops will rotate every other month between the three locations. Weekly two-hour eGovernment assistance labs are also being held at the three libraries.
The program runs from November 2012 through September 2013.
As part of the grant project, the library is collaborating with Southwest Florida Works and the Department of Children and Families.
Brochures with Information about the Collier Connects program, including the computer courses, career workshops, and the eGovernment assistance lab schedule, is available at any Collier County Library location, or view the brochure PDF.

The Squeaky Wheelchair is about the disabled. About living with a disability. About parenting a child with a disability. About civil rights and advocacy for those with disabilities. About issues and events that affect the disabled.
Thomas Moon is a business person and advocate living in Ocala Florida. He is also a young man in a wheelchair.
Thomas was the recipient of the Idelio Valdes Leadership and Advocacy Award in 2011. He was appointed to the Florida Developmental Disability Council in early 2013 by Governor Scott.
Howard Moon is Thomas's dad. He is an advocate. Former Florida Governor's Bush and Christ appointed him to the Florida Human Rights Council where he served for a number of years as Chairperson for the Central Florida area.
Both Thomas and Howard are active as advocates both at the local level in Ocala and Central Florida; and at the State level in Tallahassee.
